As the traditionally indulgent festive period draws to a close, two campaigns have launched aimed at getting people to go ‘alcohol-free’ for one month.
After the heavy excesses of the Christmas period, cutting down alcohol consumption is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions.
Thousands of people have already signed up to Alcohol Concern’s ‘Dry January’ and Cancer Research UK’s ‘Dryathlon’ campaigns.
Dry January aims to get people talking openly about their drinking, with social media channels proving a popular method to spread the word and generate discussion.
Emily Robinson, director of campaigns at Alcohol Concern, told The Guardian: “Many of us think the way we drink isn’t a problem, but even having just a few beers after work or a few glasses of wine at home too often can take you over safe limits and store up problems for the future.
“It’s not about never drinking again, it’s just the perfect opportunity for all of us to take a breather and get thinking about our drinking.
Similarly, Cancer Research UK’s ‘Dryathlon’ campaign urges participants to stay off the booze for a whole month.
Participants can receive sponsorship from their family and friends. The 2013 campaign saw an estimated 35,000 participants raise over £4m for charity.
The Dryathlon website features loads of information and advice on giving up drinking, as well as a range of tools designed to help participants calculate their intake of alcohol.
Anthony Newman, director of marketing at Cancer Research UK, said: “Whether you’re planning to give up alcohol for January or looking to take on an extra challenge in the new year, why not sign up to Dryathlon and swap your lager for a latte, safe in the knowledge that you will be helping us beat cancer sooner”.
